REFRACTORY INDEX

The series' title 'Refractory Index' has multiple references; the in-paint optics of interrelating materials alight in space, myself as an 'index' filtering and being transformed by moments of life, and also the new LED lights in my studio that have (so the specs sheet says) a very high refractory index (though this seems to confuse reflective with refractive). Another way I understand the pictures in Refractory Index is by seeing them as 'refractory' of aspects I find most telling within a collective idea/history of Painting as I know it - all the way back to Uccello and Giotto - which in geological time is not so long ago, or, in the synchronicity of imaginative time, not 'ago' at all.
